Puppy Care
Things to Consider Before Getting Your First Puppy
A friendly, practical checklist for first-time puppy parents in Singapore — from housing rules to the first night home.

Your first puppy will change your routine, your home and probably your camera roll. Taking time to prepare makes the first weeks calmer for everyone — especially the puppy.
1. Make sure your home allows a dog
HDB residents may keep one dog of an approved breed. Condo residents should check management by-laws. AVS notes that a dog licence is not approval to keep a dog at your address — that is your responsibility to confirm.
2. Choose a breed for your real life
Think about energy, size, grooming, how long the dog will be alone and who will walk it. Our breed pages explain temperament, exercise and grooming needs in plain language.
3. Get licensed
Complete AVS's Pet Ownership Course if you are a first-time licence applicant, then license your dog through PALS. Keep your address and contact details up to date.
4. Puppy-proof your home
- Mesh windows and balconies — AVS requires owners to prevent pets from falling from height.
- Hide cables, shoes, medicines and cleaning products.
- Set up a quiet resting area with a crate or playpen.
- Choose a toilet spot and stick to it.
5. Find your vet before day one
Register with a vet near you and book a check-up soon after bringing your puppy home. Ask about vaccinations, parasite control and when your puppy can safely meet other dogs.
6. Plan the first week
- Keep things calm and predictable: meals, naps, toilet breaks and play at regular times.
- Start gentle, reward-based training from the first day.
- Introduce new sounds, people and surfaces slowly and positively.
- Build alone-time gradually so your puppy learns that you always come back.
