Cavapoo vs Maltipoo: Which Is Right for You?
Two adorable Poodle crosses, two slightly different personalities. Here's how to tell which one fits your home.
By the Pawjoy team ·

Cavapoos and Maltipoos are two of the most-loved small crosses in Singapore, and it's easy to see why. Both are soft, affectionate and happiest when they're close to you. Both have a Poodle parent, which often means a lower-shedding coat. But they aren't the same dog — and the small differences matter when you're choosing a companion for the next decade or more.
Where they come from
A Cavapoo is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel crossed with a Poodle (usually Toy or Miniature). A Maltipoo is a Maltese crossed with a Toy or Miniature Poodle. Because both are crosses, puppies can vary in coat, size and temperament — even within one litter. Meeting the parents tells you far more than any breed description can.
Size and build
Both are small dogs. Maltipoos are often the more petite of the two, especially when the Poodle parent is a Toy. Cavapoos tend to be a little sturdier, with the Cavalier's longer ears and softer, spaniel-like expression.
Personality
Cavapoo
Typically gentle, easy-going and sociable. Many Cavapoos are happy to greet visitors and get along with other pets. They love company and can struggle if left alone for long periods.
Maltipoo
Typically bright, playful and very attached to their people. Some Maltipoos are more alert and vocal, and their small size makes them more delicate around boisterous young children.
Grooming
Both coats need regular brushing and professional trims. Light-coloured Maltipoos can show tear staining, so daily face wiping helps. Cavapoo ears need regular checks and cleaning. Neither is truly hypoallergenic — if allergies are a concern, spend time with the breed first.
Living in Singapore
Both crosses adapt well to apartments. HDB's approved list includes the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, the Maltese and the Poodle (Toy or Miniature), and it also includes a cross of any two listed breeds. That means a Cavapoo or Maltipoo bred from a Toy or Miniature Poodle falls within the list. HDB allows one approved dog per flat — always check the latest list on HDB's website.
So which one?
- Choose a Cavapoo if you'd like a slightly sturdier, easy-going companion who's sociable with visitors and other pets.
- Choose a Maltipoo if you'd love a very small, devoted shadow and your home is calm and adult-oriented.
- Either way, choose the individual puppy — ask about the parents, the puppy's routine and how it has been socialised.
