Meet the Corgi
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a herding dog from Wales, instantly recognisable by its fox-like face, upright ears and low, sturdy body. Despite their short legs, Corgis are athletic, quick and very smart.
Corgis bring humour and energy to a home. They bond strongly with their families and love having a job to do, whether that is learning tricks, puzzle feeders or a long evening walk.
Appearance and characteristics
A long, low body, strong legs, large erect ears and a thick double coat. Common colours include red, sable, fawn and black-and-tan, usually with white markings.
Temperament
Typically outgoing, intelligent and alert. As herders, some Corgis may nip at heels or bark to round people up — positive training and plenty of activity channel this instinct well.
Size and weight
- Height: Roughly 25–30 cm at the shoulder
- Weight: Up to about 14 kg
Corgis can gain weight easily; keeping them lean protects their long backs. These are general guide ranges; individual dogs vary.
Grooming
A double coat that sheds steadily and more heavily at certain times of year. Brush a few times a week, more during heavy shedding.
Exercise
High for their size: daily walks plus active play and training. Avoid lots of jumping on and off furniture to protect the back.
Is a Corgi suitable for Singapore living?
Corgis enjoy Singapore's parks and park connectors, but their thick coat means walks should be early or late in the day. Indoor enrichment helps on hot or rainy days.
HDB eligibility
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi does not appear on HDB's list of approved dog breeds. Keeping one in an HDB flat requires HDB's prior written permission; Corgis are more commonly kept in private or landed property. Source: HDB approved dog breeds.
