Meet the Dachshund
The Dachshund was developed in Germany to follow badgers underground, which explains its long body, keen nose and surprising courage. Today it is a devoted, entertaining companion.
Dachshunds come in miniature and standard sizes and three coat types — smooth, long-haired and wire-haired — so there is a 'sausage dog' for many tastes.
Appearance and characteristics
A long body on short legs, deep chest, long muzzle and soft hanging ears. Colours include red, cream, black-and-tan, chocolate and dapple.
Temperament
Bold, curious and loyal, sometimes stubborn. Dachshunds often love to dig and can be vocal watchdogs. Patient, consistent training helps.
Size and weight
- Height: Roughly 13–23 cm at the shoulder
- Weight: Miniature: up to about 5 kg · Standard: roughly 7–14 kg
Choose the variety that matches your housing rules and lifestyle. These are general guide ranges; individual dogs vary.
Grooming
Smooth coats need little more than a weekly wipe and brush; long-haired coats need brushing a few times a week; wire coats benefit from occasional hand-stripping.
Exercise
Moderate: daily walks and sniffing games. Use ramps and avoid lots of stairs or jumping to protect the spine, and keep them at a healthy weight.
Is a Dachshund suitable for Singapore living?
Miniature Dachshunds are popular in apartments. They can be sensitive to heat on hot pavements, so walk during cooler hours.
HDB eligibility
HDB's approved list includes the Dachshund (Light or Miniature). Standard-size Dachshunds are not covered by that entry. Source: HDB approved dog breeds.
