Meet the Pomeranian
The Pomeranian is a toy-sized member of the spitz family, descended from larger sled-pulling dogs. Its plush coat, fox-like face and confident trot have made it a favourite companion for centuries.
Poms are lively, curious and very aware of their surroundings. They love attention and make spirited, entertaining companions for adults and families with older children.
Appearance and characteristics
A tiny, compact body, abundant double coat with a ruff around the neck and a plumed tail carried over the back. Orange and cream are classic, alongside black, white, sable and parti colours.
Temperament
Extroverted, alert and often vocal. Pomeranians can be brave beyond their size, so gentle socialisation helps them feel secure with people and other dogs.
Size and weight
- Height: Roughly 15–18 cm at the shoulder
- Weight: Roughly 1.5–3 kg
One of the smallest breeds — handle with care. These are general guide ranges; individual dogs vary.
Grooming
Brush a few times a week down to the skin to prevent mats. Avoid shaving the double coat unless advised by a vet or experienced groomer.
Exercise
Low to moderate: short walks and indoor play. They enjoy learning tricks.
Is a Pomeranian suitable for Singapore living?
