Cavapoo

Sweet, soft and endlessly affectionate — a cuddly cross with a playful spark.

Meet the Cavapoo

The Cavapoo is a cross between the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Poodle, usually a Toy or Miniature Poodle. The result is a small, teddy-bear-like companion that tends to inherit the Cavalier's gentle, people-loving nature and the Poodle's quick mind.

Cavapoos are loved by first-time owners, couples and families alike because they are happiest simply being close to you. Because they are a cross rather than a standardised breed, coat, size and personality can vary from puppy to puppy — meeting the parents and asking questions is part of the joy of choosing one.

Appearance and characteristics

Expect a rounded face, soft expressive eyes and long, feathered ears. Coats range from loose waves to tight curls, in colours such as apricot, red, cream, chocolate, black and parti-colour. Many coats darken or lighten as the puppy matures.

Temperament

Cavapoos are typically affectionate, social and eager to please. They usually enjoy company and can become anxious if left alone for long hours, so they suit households where someone is around for much of the day or where alone-time is built up gradually.

Size and weight

  • Height: Roughly 23–36 cm at the shoulder
  • Weight: Roughly 4–11 kg

Adult size depends heavily on the Poodle parent (Toy vs Miniature) and on the individual dog. These are general guide ranges; individual dogs vary.

Grooming

A Cavapoo coat needs brushing several times a week to prevent mats, especially behind the ears and under the legs. Plan on regular professional grooming, ear checks and keeping the hair around the eyes tidy.

Exercise

A moderate need: daily walks plus play and short training sessions. They love sniff-walks and fetch indoors. Avoid midday heat in Singapore and watch for signs of overheating.

Is a Cavapoo suitable for Singapore living?

Their small size and adaptable nature make Cavapoos a popular choice for apartments and condos. Singapore's humidity means coats need consistent brushing and drying after baths or rain to keep skin comfortable.

HDB eligibility

HDB's approved list includes the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Poodle (Toy or Miniature), plus a cross of any two listed breeds. A Cavapoo bred from a Cavalier and a Toy or Miniature Poodle therefore falls within the list. Confirm the parentage with the seller and check HDB's current list. Source: HDB approved dog breeds.

All dogs in Singapore must also be licensed with AVS. Read our first-puppy checklist.

Cavapoo FAQs

Are Cavapoos good for first-time owners?

Many first-time owners find Cavapoos rewarding because they are usually gentle and keen to learn. They do need daily companionship, grooming and consistent, positive training.

Do Cavapoos shed?

Many Cavapoos shed less than average, but it varies with coat type. No dog is completely hypoallergenic, so spend time with the breed before deciding if allergies are a concern.

Can I keep a Cavapoo in an HDB flat?

A cross of two HDB-approved breeds is on the approved list. A Cavapoo from a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Toy or Miniature Poodle qualifies. HDB allows one approved dog per flat.

How big will a Cavapoo puppy get?

Most adult Cavapoos are small, but size depends on the Poodle parent. Ask about the parents' sizes to get the best idea.
