Meet the Poodle
Behind the glamorous haircuts, the Poodle is an athletic, highly intelligent water retriever. It comes in three sizes — Toy, Miniature and Standard — that share the same clever, affectionate character.
Poodles learn quickly and love to be involved in family life. They are also the parent breed behind many popular crosses, including the Cavapoo, Maltipoo and Goldendoodle.
Appearance and characteristics
A proud, square outline with a long neck and a dense, curly, low-shedding coat. Colours include black, white, apricot, red, chocolate, cream and silver.
Temperament
Intelligent, playful and people-oriented. Poodles thrive on training and can become bored without mental stimulation.
Size and weight
- Height: Toy: up to about 25 cm · Miniature: about 25–38 cm · Standard: over 38 cm
- Weight: Varies widely by size variety
Choose the variety that suits your home and housing rules. These are general guide ranges; individual dogs vary.
Grooming
The curly coat keeps growing and needs brushing several times a week and professional clipping every few weeks.
Exercise
Toys and Miniatures need daily walks and play; Standards need more vigorous exercise. All sizes love brain games.
Is a Poodle suitable for Singapore living?
Toy and Miniature Poodles adapt well to apartments. Their low-shedding coat is popular in Singapore homes, though it needs regular grooming in humid weather.
HDB eligibility
HDB's approved list includes the Poodle (Toy or Miniature). Standard Poodles are not covered by that entry. Source: HDB approved dog breeds.
